Style Consultant Offers Tips On Using Mirrors In the Home
Mirrors are an essential piece of the interior design puzzle. They make small spaces appear larger and dark spaces light. They add drama, create the illusion of space, improve lighting and solve a myriad of interior design problems. Properly placed, a mirror can reflect a room’s significant features or outdoor view. The frame you choose can subtly pick up colors in the room, adding cohesiveness to the room without being “matchy matchy.” Ginny Lassiter, style consultant and owner of Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash, N.C. says, “I like to use small mirrors in groupings with other mirrored pieces and artwork. A wall grouping adds a whole different dimension to the space.”
Placed over a fireplace, your mirror provides a focal point for the room. Above the headboard, it transforms into an ideal piece of bedroom art. A mirror in the corner of a room immediately makes the room appear larger. Hanging a mirror at an angle to the window makes the room brighter. An art mirror – crafted with a raku clay frame, handmade tile, mosaic glass or other media – is a work of art in its own right. It also provides a focal point and helps to interject your own personality and taste into your room design. Lassiter adds, “There’s no place that you can NOT use a mirror. You just have to be careful what it reflects. You want to be sure to emphasize another interesting part of the room. I also love mirrors in hallways because it helps to lighten them up, when they tend to be dark. Small mirrors can be used low or high.”
Another tip Lassiter offers is to try placing a mirror over a doorway and tilting it downward so it reflects you as you walk through the doorway.
